More than 100 state and local responders gathered Wednesday night for a table top emergency exercise drill that required multiple agencies to work together.
The mock incident included a multi-vehicle pileup on Interstate 99 where hazardous chemicals and an overturned prison bus were involved. Emergency officials also had to figure out how to rescue people from a nearby hillside and to contain the chemicals from entering the water and sewer system.
Blair County Emergency Management Director Dan Boyles says the exercise brought together more than 10 agencies and required local officials to strategize and think on their feet about how to contain the multiple incidents.
Boyles says local residents at risk for a chemical disaster because both the Norfolk Southern Mainline and Interstate 99 pass through the middle of the county.
