John Hanger is about to become the first person to announce his candidacy for governor in 2014.
 
The former Pennsylvania environmental protection secretary is expected to announce his candidacy for the democratic nomination during a series of press conferences on Wednesday in Philadelphia and Harrisburg and on Thursday in Pittsburgh.
 
Hanger is one of several democrats who have expressed interest in challenging Republican Governor Tom Corbett’s expected re-election bid.
 
The 55-year-old Harrisburg lawyer served five years on the state Public Utility Commission, headed the Department of Environmental Protection for nearly three years was also the founding president of the environmental group PennFuture.
