City Residents Fear Tax Hike Looms

It seems that most of the people attending last night’s public meeting hosted by the team putting together Altoona's Act 47 financial recovery plan are bracing themselves for the inevitable—higher taxes.

That doesn’t mean however, that they don’t want alternatives looked at.

Wilson Saguban was at the meeting last night and during public comment passed along a suggestion he heard on local talk radio:

Saguban referenced Logan Township trying to sell off its old municipal building.

Elisabeth Chapman told the financial recovery team that even though she felt an Earned Income Tax increase was inevitable she felt something more equitable needs to be considered.

In the end, Act 47 allows the city to exceed caps on both earned income and property taxes, provided a judge approves them each year.
