Concerns Voiced At Town Hall Meeting Regarding Local Hospital Situation
About 130 people turned out last night for a town hall meeting at the Altoona Area High school auditorium regarding the recent acquisition of Altoona Regional Health System by UPMC.
A scheduling conflict kept Hospital President Jerry Murray from being there and that didn’t sit well with many attending the meeting set up by Altoona City Councilman Dave Butterbaugh.
Several people voiced concern about whether UPMC will negotiate a deal with Highmark to give the 44,000 Highmark subscribers in Blair County access to UPMC Altoona.
During the meeting State Senator John Eichelberger noted that the state Attorney General's office had not indicated there were any Anti-trust issues with the merger, but would continue to monitor the process of getting an agreement reached between UPMC and Highmark
Rep. John McGinnis said he was concerned but optimistic there would be an agreement, however he stressed the importantance of the community pressure to keep a spotlight on the situation.
