Congressman Barletta Switches Stance on Shutdown

A mid-state congressman says he's switching his stance and no longer supports a bill to reopen the federal government without strings attached.

Congressman Lou Barletta represents Columbia County and portions of Cumberland, Dauphin, Northumberland and Perry counties. He says he now believes the best chance to win congressional approval of a government funding bill is to attach a provision repealing a medical devices tax that was in the Affordable Care Act.

House Republican leaders have insisted the price to keep the federal government funded and operating is to scale back President Obama's signature health care law.
Before the October first shutdown, Barletta voted with GOP leaders on bills to scale back elements of the law.

Then he joined four other Pennsylvania Republicans last week in breaking party ranks and saying he's support a budget bill without strings attached.
