Councilman: 17 Blighted Properties Razed Last Year

Altoona City Council is calling another year of their blight removal program a big success.

Councilman Dave Butterbaugh told the board Wednesday that 17 blighted structures were removed over the past year – and 14 of the demolitions were handled by city workers.

The city spent $134-thousand on blight removal over the past 12 months. Butterbaugh says the city attempts to collect the money – but its mostly out-of-town landlords who are difficult to track down.

The city also rehabilitated several other homes or sold them to local contractors, which will repair them and return them to the housing market.
