Freehling: ACT 47 Plan Cause of Force Reduction

Altoona Police Chief Janice Freehling gave her annual report to city council at Wednesday’s meeting. She says the city’s ACT 47 Financial Recovery Plan forced 9 officers to part ways with the department due to potential benefit and pension cuts. Freehling says several new hires will leave their field training program in the upcoming weeks.

Altoona’s overall crime rate increased by 1-percent last year – with the number of serious crimes falling while many secondary offenses such as burglaries, larcenies, assaults and vandalism incidents increased. Freehling says much of the crime in Altoona is drug related.
