Highmark Worth $15.2-Billion, 2012 Profit was $432.2-Million
As health insurance premiums continue to skyrocket…so does the net worth of one of Pennsylvania’s biggest medical insurance companies.
Pittsburgh-based Highmark, Inc. is now worth $15.2-billion and turned a profit of $432.2-million last year, although that includes assets gained when it acquired Blue Cross Blue Shield of Delaware. The company said in a news release Wednesday that without that acquisition, Highmark's profit was $246.5-million.
Highmark's profit was $444.7-million in 2011, but the company's value was $14.8-billion. Highmark and its affiliates had about 5.3 million health care customers at the end of last year. About 3.2 million of those are in its core market of western Pennsylvania, with 1.1 million in central Pennsylvania and the Lehigh Valley, including Allentown.
