The unofficial start of the summer season got underway over the weekend with sweltering temperatures and solemn observances throughout the area.
While pools were full and families gathered for picnics, many people did take time to remember loved ones and friends who have passed away and those who made the ultimate sacrifice for the country they loved.
There were moving scenes throughout Blair County at cemeteries decorated with flags and newly planted flowers as memories and gratitude were the order of the day.
The Blair County War Veterans Council held a Salute to Iraq War veterans in Altoona with the annual parade winding through the city to the Robert Laws Veterans Mall.
