Interested in owning a former state prison? You just may get a chance.
The Pennsylvania Department of General Services says the State Correctional Institution in Cresson is being sold at an upcoming auction.. The corrections department is in the process of winding down operations at the site.
An online appraisal for the property sets its value at $500,000. The Department of Corrections says the property consists of 451 acres housing a total of 40 buildings. State officials say they are moving to unload the property quickly because it will cost the commonwealth nearly $2-million per-year to maintain it.
The prison site is one of more than a dozen properties being unloaded by the state.
