Public Safety Program Involving Local college Students Considered

Local officials are kicking the tires on a safety enhancement program in State College involving Penn State students.

In light of increasing problems with student parties getting out of hand in and around the city the idea is drawing some consideration.

The Downtown Safety Enhancement Program has been operating in State College for nine years as a partnership between Penn State University police, State College police and the Downtown Improvement District.  Uniformed college students hopefully deter crime by patrolling certain areas and reporting potential trouble to the borough police.

Officials from the city of Altoona, Logan Township Police and Penn State Altoona have started to discuss replicated the program.

One of the trouble spots which probably would be targeted would be the student housing development Nittany Pointe in Logan Township.
