A report released Tuesday by Commissioner Terry Tomassetti and finance director Bob Kuntz shows the county has an unfunded pension obligation of nearly $30-million.
County leaders have only contributed $800-thousand to the plan since 2002. Tomassetti says it’s a situation that needs to be addressed.
Tomassetti says the pension is the county’s costliest unfunded mandate and a solution can only come from Harrisburg or possible reassessment. The county’s pension plan has about $40-million in assets and is currently paying out more than $3.4-million per-yeart to 359 retirees.
