State Rep Candidates Debate Issues In Altoona

Last night in Altoona the candidates running for State Representative, 79th District, faced off in the first of a series of debates.

Democrat Dr. Richard Flarend, Associate Professor of Physics at Penn State Altoona and Republican Dr. John McGinnis, Associate Professor of Finance, also at Penn State Altoona faced questions that focused mainly on drug and alcohol issues.

One question posed to the candidates last night concerned their view of the controversial bill proposed by House Majority Leader Mike Turzai which would privatize state liquor stores.  Flarend says he doesn’t think much of the idea.

Flarend also cited studies that show privatization would increase alcohol abuse and underage drinking. A point of view McGinnis disputed.

About 60 people attended the event was held at the Devorris Downtown Center and was sponsored by the Division of Student Affairs at Penn State Altoona and Blair Countians for Drug Free Communities.

The next debate is scheduled for October 18th at the Convention center and will be sponsored by ABCD Corp and will focus on Business issues.
