Altoona City Manager Joe Weakland will leave his post at the end of the month.
Councilman Michael Haire and several other top city officials have acknowledged receiving Weakland’s resignation, but could not comment on it because the announcement hasn’t been made public – and because it’s a personnel issue.
WRTA News has also learned that Weakland informed several city staff members about his decision in a meeting on Tuesday. The city has called a special council meeting for Monday night to accept Weakland’s resignation. Council will also be tasked with appointing an interim city manager, who will step into the position on August 1st.
Weakland has worked for the city for more than 40 years – he spent the last 17 of them as manager. He’s expected to take on a consulting role for the city as council begins the process of hiring a new manager.
