Penn State Trustees’ Head Vows Changes

The head of the Penn State board of trustees is vowing to put into effect changes recommended in a report on the child sex abuse scandal that has engulfed the university.

Chairman Karen Peetz said retired FBI director Louis Freeh's report on the Jerry Sandusky abuse scandal recommends "structural changes for the way the university is governed to ensure greater transparency and collaboration." She said she and university President Rodney Erickson have appointed a task force including board members and administration officials to ensure implementation of the measures "with care and urgency."

Freeh's report said top Penn State officials concealed information about sexual abuse allegations against Sandusky, a former assistant football coach, to avoid bad publicity. It recommended evaluation of security and access protocols for all campus buildings, better tracking of university programs involving children and abuse awareness and reporting training for faculty, coaches and staff.

Sandusky was convicted of abusing 10 boys, some on campus. He has maintained his innocence as he awaits sentencing.

Peetz said in a statement Wednesday night that "no one has been hurt more than the victims of Mr. Sandusky's conduct, and we must not lose sight of that fact."

She vowed an evaluation of the "fundamental culture" of Penn State and efforts for "transparency and accountability."
