PA Wind Industry: Wrong Time for Crunch Time

A little more than five months left and counting – and the ticker is headed down for jobs while time passes.

That’s the gist of a letter to congressional leaders, signed by Pennsylvania Republican Congressman Michael Fitzpatrick, about the production tax credit. It’s a benefit for new wind-energy production that expires at the end of the year, and the benefits are spread around to manufacturers and suppliers.

Christina Simeone with PennFuture's Energy Center says the limbo has been detrimental.

One local wind turbine manufacturer (Gamesa) laid off 165 workers earlier this month, and warns more will lose their jobs if the credit disappears. The production tax credit has bipartisan support, yet there are also calls to let it expire.
