APD: Man Tried to Run Down Wife with Car

An Altoona man is facing aggravated assault charges after police say he tried to run down his wife and their 6-month-old child with his car.

The incident happened around 3:30PM Wednesday in a parking lot on the 300 Block of Howard Avenue. Officers say 33-year-old Joseph Weakland allegedly put the vehicle into reverse and accelerated quickly after his wife removed the child from a car seat during an argument. The woman was taking groceries out of the truck when the incident occurred.

A witness at the scene told police the woman and her child would have been struck and injured if she hadn’t jumped out of the way. Weakland has been charged with aggravated and simple assault, reckless endangerment and endangering the welfare of a child.

He was released on $25,000 unsecured bail and faces a preliminary hearing Wednesday in Blair County Central Court.
