A major new fire prevention effort is about to get underway in our region thanks to a grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
The Hollidaysburg Phoenix and Lakemont Volunteer Fire Services will share the $183,000 with 13 other fire companies in four counties. The money will be used for the “Safe at Home” prevention and safety program.
The grant will allow for the purchase of 3,900 dual-sensor smoke alarms, 150 strobe light smoke alarms for hearing-impaired individuals and several electronic fire extinguisher simulators. Tim Longwell of Decoplan Associates wrote the grant on behalf of the fire fighters. He says banding together for the pot of money made lots of sense.
The money will also be used by the companies to perform in-home safety inspections and fire alarm installations for residents who need them.
