County Solid Waste And Recycling program Dissolved

Come Monday, several county employees will be out of a job.

That’s because on Tuesday the Blair County Solid Waste and Recycling Department was dissolved by the county board of commissioners and its programs handed over to the Intermunicipal Relations Committee.

Some of the six workers losing their jobs will stay on with the IRC.

Another aspect of the change will be the removal of recycling bins located at nine sites across the county.

Residents are being told they can still recycle at several places in the county including Cove Recycling in Roaring Spring, Burgmeier Hauling in Altoona and Paul Kane Disposal in Williamsburg.

The county’s solid waste program had been operating for over ten years through funding made possible by a landfill tipping fee.  The fee was recently found to be unconstitutional, and the funding disappeared.
