The major-party candidates for auditor general vowed Friday not to run for higher office while serving as the state government's independent fiscal watchdog and rooting out waste, fraud and abuse.
In their first televised debate of the general-election campaign on Friday, Republican Rep. John Maher and Democrat Rep. Eugene DePasquale said they would complete any terms to which they are elected.
The incumbent auditor general, Jack Wagner, ran for governor but lost in the 2010 Democratic primary. His Democratic predecessor, now-U.S. Sen. Bob Casey, was auditor general when he lost the 2002 gubernatorial primary to Ed Rendell.
Libertarian Party candidate Betsy Summers, a Wilkes-Barre businesswoman who also participated in the debate, didn't say whether she would commit to serving a full term but said she has no plans to run for governor.
