Union Questions Appointment Of Deputy Fire Chief

The recent appointment of Mike Tofano as the new Deputy Fire Chief was questioned last night at the Altoona City Council meeting.

Local 299 International Association of Fire Fighters President Bryson Peterman objected to the move.

City council defended the appointment by saying it was simply a matter of keeping things the way they had been.  Earlier this year long time Altoona Fire Chief Renny Santone stepped down and his position was filled by Tim Hileman and Tafano was simply moved up into the position formerly held by Hileman.

City Manager Joe Weakland told council members that there are always enough firefighters ready for action.

Taofano’s appointment to deputy Fire Chief went into effect October 1st.
