U.S. Rep. Bill Shuster is aiming to become the chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.
Shuster sent a letter to fellow Republicans after last week's election saying he has demonstrated leadership and achieved a strong record of accomplishments in his 11 years on the committee.
Shuster's father, Bud, chaired the committee from 1995 to 2001.
The 52-year-old Shuster won election to a seventh term representing Pennsylvania's 9th Congressional District, which will cover all or parts of 11 counties in south-central and southwestern Pennsylvania.
Shuster currently chairs the subcommittee on Railroads, Pipelines, and Hazardous Materials.
