The first of the 1,500 inmates being moved from SCI-Cresson will get under way this week.
Sources close to the operation say that mental health wing inmates will likely be transferred to SCI-Benner, a Centre County facility completed last year.
Since much of the staff at Cresson will be relocated to Benner, the move likely will mean corrections officers and other staff will be transferred much sooner than the June 30 deadline the state Department of Corrections has set for closing the facility here.
The DOC made the surprise announcement last week that the Cresson prison and a state facility in Greensburg would be closed in an effort to save a projected $23 million.
