Change In City Government Under Consideration

The first step to a change in Altoona’s form of government was taken by City Council last night with the introduction of an ordinance.

City solicitor Larry Clapper says the ordinance could be adopted next month.

The referendum would appear on the ballot in the upcoming primary. asking voters if they want to see a government study commission created.

Clapper explains what will transpire if the measure is approved and seven commission candidates are voted in.

Councilman Dave Butterbaugh says the current form of government isn’t the problem.

Act 47 is the process Butterbaugh was referring to and city leaders are looking at Home Rule as an exit strategy out of that.

The ordinance comes up for adoption on February 13.
