Corbett Announces Liquor Privatization Plan

Governor Tom Corbett, joined by Rep. Mike Turzai, R-Allegheny, Wednesday announced his plan to privatize the liquor system in Pennsylvania and committed $1 billion in proceeds from the process to education funding.

The grant will focus on four priority areas: school safety, enhanced early education programs, individualized learning and science, technology, engineering and mathematics courses and programs.

House Majority Leader Mike Turzai (R-Allegheny) says he feels the new privatization plan put forth Wednesday shows that the Governor is on the same wavelength with the majority of lawmakers and Pennsylvania consumers.

The Governor’s plan includes auctioning 1200 retail wine and liquor sale licenses, and allowing existing retailers, including grocers, big box stores and beer distributors, to bid for licenses.  Currently, Pennsylvania has far fewer alcohol retail establishments per resident than the average state.
