PA Municipal League: Home Rule Would Benefit Altoona

The Pennsylvania Municipal League says Altoona would likely benefit from becoming a Home Rule Chartered municipality.

Organization representatives made a presentation to City Council Wednesday night, laying out the pros and cons of the move. The group told city leaders that state laws governing boroughs, townships and cities are antiquated, leaving many in financial distress.

Councilman Bruce Kelley says the change would allow the city’s residents to more say in how they are governed.

Blair County elections data released Wednesday shows that 11 city residents are vying for seven spots on the city’s Home Rule Charter commission.
