Penelec is partnering with a green energy company in an effort to recycle old refrigerators and help consumers save some money.
The utility company and JACO Environmental are offering customers $50 to discard their refrigerators that aren’t energy efficient. The company will pick-up the units free of charge – the plastics, glass and other components are turned into new products.
Officials say older refrigerator units use three times the power of new units. Penelec says a typical consumer saves about $150 per year in utility costs when they recycle an old refrigerator or freezer.
Penelec services more than a 100,000 customers in Central PA.
