Auditor General: AASD's Murray Gave Illegal Pay Raises
Pennsylvania’s top fiscal watchdog says the Altoona Area School District former superintendent Dr. Dennis Murray gave illegal pay raises to several employees without board approval.
Auditor General Eugene DePasquale was in Altoona Monday to discuss his findings.
DePasquale says the money in question could have been used to further fund educational programs – especially at a time when budgets are tight. He says while current and former board members share in the blame, Murray was the one responsible for making sure the school code is properly enforced.
DePasquale laid out several recommendations for the board and district administrators to follow going forward. And he recommended the board work with the Department of Education and the state retirement system to get the money back.
