Sheriff: Gun Permit Requests Slowing

The Blair County Sheriff’s Department says the number of people requesting conceal and carry permits are returning back to normal levels.
The office was bombarded earlier this year by residents seeking either new permits or renewal permits. A deadly school shooting in Connecticut and Congress’s attempt to ban assault rifles and magazine clips led to the flurry of activity.
The department issued a total of 1,600 permits from January through April, well-above the normal 20-30 requests per week that are typically processed. Sheriff Mitch Cooper says a backlog in Harrisburg added to the problem and that caused the delays.
Records show that about 14,000 Blair County residents have conceal and carry permits – or approximately 10-percent of the county’s population.
