IRC Expands Composting and Recycling at Duncansville Facility
The Intermunicipal Relations Committee (IRC) has expanded the list of services and products available at their compost and recycling facility just south of Duncansville.
A drop-off for bottles, cans, paper, cardboard and yard waste is now open to the public each Tuesday. Screened compost and mulch are now also available for sale, thanks to the recent purchase of new composting equipment funded from a Recycling Program Grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP).
Local residents can now purchase screened compost, screened mulch, and unscreened mulch at either the Buckhorn or Duncansville facility.
The Duncansville Compost Facility is open every Tuesday from through Thanksgiving from noon to 5 p.m. Residents can drop-off yard waste and other recyclables during regular business hours. Finished material can only be loaded between the hours of 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m.
Screened compost is $20 and screened mulch $17/cubic yard. Compost is a great soil additive to your garden and flower beds. It is contains organic matter that has been composted or broken down by microbes, heat and water. Compost provides improved water holding capacity for dry, rocky soils and can help to loosen heavy clay soils. It is a soil conditioner, mulch, and natural fertilizer all wrapped into one. As the compost breaks down it provides a slow release of nutrients to plants. It is great for use on annuals, perennials, shrubs, trees, and vegetables.
