Police Warn Motorists to Watch Speed in School Zones

School is back in session all across Blair County – and local police say some motorists are ignoring school bus safety laws and school zone speed limits.

Altoona and Logan Township Police have been on the lookout for motorists not obeying the law. And several people have already been warned or cited across Blair County, including in Hollidaysburg where students have been back in class for more than a week. The National Transportation Safety Committee says school safety zone and pedestrian accidents account for the deaths of more than 100 people each year.

PennDOT and local police say motorists who ignore speed limits in school zones can face a $500 fine and several points on their license. Failing to stop for a school bus will get you a $500 fine and a 60-day license suspension.

Local police say most of the violations begin at the beginning of the year when motorists are getting back into a new routine of dealing with busses and children who are returning to school.
