Judge: State Police Can Keep Orie, Melvin Computers

A judge says state police can keep computer equipment used to convict former state Senator Jane Orie and her sister, former state Supreme Court Justice Joan Orie Melvin, on campaign corruption charges.

The Senate Republican Caucus argued last month for the return of the email server and 15 hard drives taken during a raid of Orie's Senate offices in 2009.

But Allegheny County prosecutors say police should retain the equipment until the sisters' appeals are exhausted. Common Pleas Judge John Zottola agreed with prosecutors in a ruling late Friday. A state Superior Court panel is scheduled to hear Orie's appeal September 25th in Pittsburgh.

The sisters and a third sibling, Janine Orie -- who worked as Melvin's aide -- have been convicted of using state-paid staffers to run their political campaigns.
