Huntingdon County officials say the human remains found on a Warrior’s Mark farm back in May are those of an Altoona woman who went missing nearly 15 years ago.
The district attorney’s confirmed Sherry Leighty’s death on Thursday after receiving the results of DNA tests conducted by the University of North Texas. Leighty’s former father in law Kenneth Leighty remains jailed without bail in Huntingdon County awaiting trial on homicide charges.
Kenneth Leighty led police investigators to the remains after admitting to the murder, which he described as an accident. Police got a break in the case earlier this year after Sherry Leighty’s sister created a page on Facebook. Kenneth Leighty faces a formal arraignment in Huntingdon County Court next week.
