Allegheny Mountain Firefighters Initiative to Hold Major Recruitment Event
The Allegheny Mountain Firefighters will host a major recruitment event Saturday from Noon until 6 p.m. outside of the Logan Valley Mall in Altoona.
Allen Rhine, Program Coordinator for the Initiative says that in 1976 there were 300,000 volunteer firefighters in Pennsylvania. In 2005 that number had dropped 76% to 72,000.
If you join, the Initiative will train you to be a firefighter. There are other benefits too, such as a $10,000 tuition reimbursement to go to college, health coverage and life insurance, childcare services and lost wage reimbursement while training, and fuel reimbursement.
The Allegheny Mountain Firefighter Initiative was born out of a $5.1 Million SAFER grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to recruit and retain volunteers for volunteer fire companies in Blair, Bedford, Cambria and Huntingdon Counties.
