A.J. Burnett would be a great fit for Pirates

It may seem like business as usual between the Pirates and Yankees, but the recent talk that the Pirates are trying to acquire pitcher A.J. Burnett is a solid move by the Bucco's. The Pirates are being reported as the leading candidate to trade for the veteran pitcher.

After three years of very inconsistent pitching in New York, Yankees fans will surely be rady to get rid of him. That notion should not concern Pirates fans because Burnett is still a considerable upgrade to anyone in the current Pirates rotation.
The Yankees are willing to absorb a large portion of Burnett's $33 million contract if it means they can ship the right-hander out of town. However, the Yankees refuse to move Burnett unless they receive players back in the deal, according to numerous reports.

The Pirates are evaluating which players could be included in a trade, but the damage could be limited. Though it does not appear that a trade is imminent, the Yankees are talking with three other clubs about Burnett, though the Pirates appear to be the frontrunners.

Burnett was signed by the Yankees in the first place because Yankee hitters couldn't hit him. He made five starts against the Yanks in 2008 as a Toronto Blue Jay and went 3-1 with a 1.64 ERA. The knock on Burnett is he may break down during the rigors of a season, but in fact Burnett has been pretty resilient in pinstripes. He has averaged 195 innings per season with the Yankees.

Burnett has pitched to a 34-35 record with a 4.79 ERA and 1.447 WHIP as a Yankee. That's despite all that firepower in the lineup and with the superior defensive skills of his teammates behind him.

We all know that the talent in his right arm is beyond any Pirates pitcher, and the hope is he can harness that talent. He has to trust it I guess. My biggest gripe on A.J. Burnett is his low tolerance for stress, and he has been known to self-destruct.

If Burnett is going to have any success as a Pirate, the one area that he'll need to improve in is the walk column. Last season Burnett ranked tenth in the AL with 8.18 K's per nine innings, but he also ranked second in the AL in walks with 83.

Burnett would fill in as the Pirates number on pitcher, and for the time being let young starts like Jeff Karstens and James McDonald more time to mature as pitchers without the stress of being labeled an ace.

A rotation on Burnett, Kevin Correia, Jeff Karstens, Charlie Morton, and Brad Lincoln would be fine by me.

Any opinion on bringing in Burnett has to be held until you see what the Pirates are offering in return. A source said the Pirates are willing to take on only $10 million of his remaining $33 million contract, and they offered what has been termed as two borderline prospects.

If Burnett ends up in Pittsburgh, he brings with him some name recognition and interest to the Pirates. Watch-ability in Pittsburgh is important, and Burnett will bring that with each start, no matter how far below .500 the Pirates get.

Nothing Left to Give: Joe Paterno dies at 85
altText

409 wins, 2 National Titles, 46 seasons, and millions of dollars in donations is what Joe Paterno gave to the Pennsylvania State University. Joe built great men out of boys, and he gave rural Central Pennsylvania a national presence with football teams that could compete with anybody. The end of his legendary life comes in the midst of scandal, shame, and tragedy.

How do you put into words the true reach of his legendary life?

Paterno will be remembering for the great things he has done in his life. The way he lived for Penn State, his commitment to the players he served, and his ability to communicate with the youth of our nation in a way they was beyond most parents abilities. 350 players who have played for Coach Paterno have signed NFL contracts. He was a master of the game, and was always biggest on discipline and playing smart. Many of his players were just part of his extended family.

You'll see and hear many testaments of Paterno's good will and character throughout the next few weeks. The outcry of his life works will ring from every corner of this country, Joe has touched so many lives in many different ways. Many have been influenced by Joe, and will share the good memories of a life lived to the fullest.

"Joe was a friend, and Penn State's best ambassador. Legend. (It was) An honor to be a part of the radio broadcast and to have worked with Joe and George Paterno"

-Roger Corey Penn State Broadcast Team

His passing is sad, but the sentiment from his family about his final moments shows his strength.

Paterno passed away at 9:25 a.m. ET Sunday, and the official cause of death was metastic small cell carcinoma of the lung. He was surrounded in his dying moments like he was in life, he was with family and friends. His family released the following statement about Joe, and the support he has received.

"It is with great sadness that we announce that Joe Paterno passed away earlier today. His loss leaves a void in our lives that will never be filled. He died as he lived. He fought hard until the end, stayed positive, thought only of others and constantly reminded everyone of how blessed his life had been. His ambitions were far reaching, but he never believed he had to leave this Happy Valley to achieve them. He was a man devoted to his family, his university, his players and his community."

A statement from university president Rodney Erickson and the Board of Trustees was released shortly after Paterno's death:

"We grieve for the loss of Joe Paterno, a great man who made us a greater university. His dedication to ensuring his players were successful both on the field and in life is legendary and his commitment to education is unmatched in college football. His life, work and generosity will be remembered always.

"The University plans to honor him for his many contributions and to remember his remarkable life and legacy. We are all deeply saddened."

Pay homage to the man, he truly gave all he had. Most of us in life can only hope to give most of what we are to a singular thing. Paterno was a victim of bad circumstances. He did what what he thought was right, and even if it wasn't by your standards enough, he wasn't the one abusing the children.

I have heard some blame Sandusky for Paterno's death, some calling him a killer. Paterno's death was not caused by Sandusky; it was the result of an illness. The real tragedy in State College was the scandal, and Paterno's death just added to the legacy and impact of the most terrible NCAA scandal ever.

Penn State Recruiting: Where are the five star recruits?
altText

With Bill O'Brien still in NFL mode, his staff has been meeting with and contacting recruits to fill out the 2012 class. Among other missing pieces, is the glaring fact that the Nittany Lions have yet to get a commitment from a five star recruit.

Yes, the Sandusky sex abuse scandal is playing it's part, the coaching staff is trying to salvage this years class and not looking for the one stud to send them over the top. If you're trying to play catch up, you'll never get ahead.

A bigger issue is, and has been for a few years, the fact that Penn State isn't the biggest destination in the Big Ten Conference. Schools loke Ohio State, Wisconsin, Michigan, and now Nebraska all offer great opportunities and a chance to be a winner now.

The barrage of four-star recruits means the Nittany Lions will field some good and solid teams, but getting and attracting five star guys is how you determine how elite a program is.

Penn State should start by looking at the top players in this state. According to Rivals.com, of the top ten best high school players in Pennsylvania, Penn State has only secured one of these players, WR Eugene Lewis from Plymoth PA (four-star).

The biggest blow to Penn State recruiting efforts has been the inability to lock down Noah Spence. Spence is the top ranked defensive end in the nation. He is also the top recruit in PA and the ninth best overall recruit in the country.

The best schools lock down the best talent in their home state. Spence is all that and more, and he plays a position Penn State has been known to develop NFL quality talent at. Spence is an immediate starter, but now for rival Ohio State.

The inability to nab any five star recruits is one failure, but losing a blue-chip recruit you have been courting all year from your own state is another level.

There are still players in PA that are looking at Penn State, most notably Demetrious Cox. Cox is ranked as the tenth best recruit in PA, as a four star defensive back from Jeanette PA. Cox was visiting the PSU campus over the weekend.

It might be a little too late in the game for O'Brien to make a huge impact on this year's recruits, his real test will come in the form of 2013 and 2014 recruiting classes. That's when Nittany Lions fans will get a good gauge on how well he can fill the role as savior to a Penn State Football Program still reeling from controversy.

Penn State Football: Meet Jordan Lucan, O'Brien's first commitment.
altText
After beating a tough Denver Broncos defense on Saturday, it only took until Tuesday for Penn State Head Coach Bill O'Brien to get his first recruit to commit.

Reports from 247sports.com are reporting that defensive back Jordan Lucas from Worchester Academy (Mass) has committed to Penn State. Lucas was looking at Temple, and ready to sign but chose the Nittany Lions.

Lucas stands at 6'1", taller than any of Penn State's defensive backfield this past year. He is considered a 3 star recruit and there are reports that grades could become an issue at the college level, hence the post graduate attendance at an academy.

He's quick, and it hasn't been determined if he'll play at cornerback or saftey at Penn State.

Penn State Football: Erickson says "We will honor Joe (Paterno)"
altText

One of the most interesting things that came from a meeting involving Penn State president Rodney Erickson and approximately 600 alumni to discuss the recent happening surrounding the university and its football program was the fact that Penn State will honor Joe Paterno for his accomplishments.

"There is no plan in place at the present time, but there will be," Erickson said. "I can't tell you yet what it will be or when it will be, but we will publicly honor Joe and his wife, Sue, for all the many things they have done for the university, both from an athletic standpoint and an academic standpoint."

Not quite an admission of guilt, or unjust haste, but at least there the talk of taking Paterno's statue down at Beaver Stadium is a thing of the past.

This is quite a turn around in stance from Penn State, and the recent reaction from alumni over the hire of Bill O'Brien as the new Penn State Football Head Coach, and not Tom Bradley probably had something to do with it.

Paterno coached at Penn State for 61 seasons (46 as head coach) and collected 409 wins, the most in NCAA Division I history. Ignoring Paterno's achievement, athletically, is much like Pete Rose's Hall of Fame absence.

While Erickson is trying to repair the school's image with the general public, alumni, and employees, the past few months have hit Penn State hard. While the school fired Paterno, they continue to support former AD Tim Curley and President Gram Spanier from afar. Honoring Paterno is the right thing in this case, and you should applaud the school for standing up for what's right, there could be some backlash should they honor Paterno from some, who maintain their focus on the real victims.

The University has no formal commitment to keeping Erickson's word, but in light of the recent findings on Paterno's health and his continued support for the school (He reportedly gave over $100,000 to the school after he was fired) I do believe the University will do the right thing.

Erickson is also meeting tonight in Philadelphia and Friday in New York with more alumni to further gauge reactions and answer tough questions.

Erickson said he has not spoken to Paterno since he was fired but did send him a note Wednesday, thanking him for his contributions to the university and wishing him well in his fight against cancer.

Pittsburgh Steelers: Hines Ward to take pay cut to remain in Black and Gold
altText
Considering how far he fell on the depth chart, I thought we had seen the last of Hines Ward in Pittsburgh. Sobering thought, for I can easily remember him wearing a number 16 jersey in the preseason of his rookie year taking snaps at QB and looking like the second coming of "Slash". Thank god he took hold as receiver, one of the best in Steeler's history.
But the truth is, Ward was sitting at 4th or 5th in the depth chart behind Pro-Bowlers Mike Wallace and Antonio Brown, second year man Emmanuel, and veteran Jerrico Cotchery. The biggest factor in bringing back Ward was his salary, and now that doesn't seem to be a problem for the Steelers.
Wide receiver Hines Ward said he is willing to take a pay cut if that means he can remain with the Steelers. Ward obviously doesn't want to leave the team he was drafted by, and he's not ready to retire.
Ward is scheduled to make $4 million in the last two years of his contract, too much for a WR that will be fighting for playing time next year.
"I do want to play. I still think I can play," Ward told The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "I'm not even thinking like that -- what if. If that scenario happens, I'll be devastated, but I do want to play football."
Ward has amassed 1000 career catches and 12083 yards in his tenure with the Steelers, but he only caught 46 balls this year and totaled 381 yards.
The Steelers know when to let better than anyone else in the NFL, but Ward has some gas left in his tank, and his veteran leadership is a terrific influence on the young stars that have replaced him.

I suspect the Steelers will continue to try and find value at WR in this upcoming draft by selecting a candidate in the later rounds. WR is a position they are very young and talented, and top priority should be on offensive line and nose tackle.
Casey Hampton is going to be a dinosaur compared to Ziggy Hood and Cameron Heyward. Both Hood and Heyward should see significant playing time, even with Bret Keisel in the mix.

NFL Playoffs: Looking at the Losers
altText
One week into the NFL Playoffs, and four teams find themselves looking at next year already. The Bengals, Lions, Falcons, and Steelers all entered the post season with different expectations, yet all three found the same fate. Here's a quick take on the teams that are done, and what to expect moving forward.
Bengals: Never expected to compete, the Bengals beat everyone playing in the AFC North. The second wildcard team was expected to be the Jets, Chargers, Chiefs and not the Bengals. The third AFC North team in, Cincinnati were victims of a soft rush defense and a rookie QB. Carson-less the Bengals put together a terrific season lead by Dalton and fellow rookie AJ Green. The Bengals have a younger core at QB, WR, and LB but lack a strong front seven on defense and a running back that could be counted on. The overachieved and could be one year wonders come next winter.
Lions: I thought for sure the Lions were going to pull the upset. The Lions only proved that, despite their giant leap forward in competitiveness, they are still way behind the big boys in the NFC. They don't have the athletes down their roster, as the Saints and Packers do, and the stars in Mo-town can only do so much. This team is exciting to watch and still a few season away from being a force in the NFC.
Falcons: This season never matured for the Falcons, and without a truly healthy running attack the Falcons found it hard to rely solely on Matt Ryan. The Atlanta Falcons have come a long way from where they stood some four-plus years ago, when a series of scandals sabotaged an already star-crossed franchise the Falcons still can't find a way to break through.
Steelers: Enough of the pieces are young enough to keep some hope of another playoff run, the Steelers have more than a few questions on personnel. Injuries aside, this years team was playing with house money and a real chance to win it all this year. They again played down to the competition and lost.

Penn State Football:Hiring O'Brien draws strong negative reaction
altText
The news, though yet unconfirmed by the University, of Bill O'Brien being named the next head coach at Penn State is drawing a vaviety of reaction from sports commentators and former players. Most of the reaction is unfavorable.

From the way the University is handeling the situation to the hire itself Penn State is under heavy criticism. Here's a quick look at some of the reactions.
Via Twitter:
Evan Royster @Evan_Royster : it could be a good fit... we could use some help on offense and he has clearly had some success... can he do it w/o tom tho?
Nathan Stupar @thenastynate34 : So is Bill O'Brien official? #psunation
Cory Giger @CoryGiger :Appears Joyner was being disingenuous at best saying coach would be able to take advantage of recruiting period. Not if he's in NFL
Tom Dienhart @BTNTomDienhart :Friedgen on O'Brien as a recruiter: "He was a very good recruiter at Georgia Tech and Maryland. He's a tireless worker. ...
Rittenberg/Bennett @ESPN_BigTen :PSU admin showing its inexperience throughout search process. But important to remember actions of Curley, Spanier put PSU in this spot.
Gene Wojciechowski @GenoEspn :Not sure about O'Brien hire, but I am sure Penn State needed to go outside ``the family'' for head coach. Time for a different perspective.
LaVar Leap Arrington @LaVarArrington :I'm done all my PSU stuff will be down before obriens introduction! We are! No more for me!

PSU Coaching Search: Would Bill O'Brien Satisfy Nittany Lion Fans.
altText

According to reports by ESPN's Adam Schefter, Penn State is meeting Today with Patriots offensive coordinator Bill O'Brien. Schefter is saying that Penn State has identified O'Brien as the coach they want.

"Penn State has been eyeing, scouting and honing in on the 42-year-old O'Brien throughout the past month, sources said. He fits the profile of the head coach Penn State has been seeking. O'Brien is well-schooled and has a mixture of experience at the college and pro levels. In an odd coincidence, O'Brien even attended and played football at Brown, as Paterno did."

From ESPN.com "Source: Penn St., Bill O'Brien to meet"

If you are frustrated with Penn State's coaching search, that's largely because they have kept such a tight lid on the entire process. This is really the first "leaked" news anybody has got. In fact any small bits that have come out have been related to NFL Coaches. San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Greg Roman has already interviewed for the job, and Green Bay Packers QB coach Tom Clements are the other two rumored coaches interested in the gig. This leads me to believe that the lack of news is because Penn State is getting a lot of no's relating to interest in becoming the next head man for the Nittany Lions. No's are generally short with few people getting involved. Out of respect for the University, and out of the interest of becoming a news story, those not interested keep things quiet. It's when you have interest that things leak. More people get involved, and that fosters the environment for the news to get out. The media are hungry, and this story is a big one. I trust everyone writing and following this story are exhausting every resource and source possible and getting absolutely nowhere. What has been confirmed is that, initially, Penn State got a lot of nothing from their few top choices. Tony Dungy and Chris Peterson each relayed to Penn State that there was not interested in interviewing for the job. If Penn State actually hires Bill O'Brian would that satisfy a hungry fan base? I'm sure Nittany Nation would not be extremely excited about the hire, but at this point Penn State just needs to get something in place. O'Brien has NFL experience, and that's good. You do have to question the Belichick coaching tree, littered with failures. Romeo Crennel, Charlie Weis, Josh McDanials, Al Groh, and Eric Mangini have all been disappointments. The jury is still out on Jim Schwartz with the Lions, and Krik Ferentz with Iowa has done a decent job. One name under Billichick has had hall-of-fame success, Nick Saban. O'Brian doesn't have the name factor Penn State fans are searching for, but this late into the game, I doubt David Joyner is sitting on a huge hire. Penn State is struggling to get interest in the job from the people they truly want to hire.
